Shanghai Tower: The Cranes Come Down

Since construction on the Shanghai Tower began in 2008, cranes have perched on top of, and surrounded the growing super tall building, allowing crews to put various pieces of the structure in place and becoming part of the Shanghai’s skyline in the process.

Three months ago, crane operator and amateur photographer Wei Gensheng snapped several breathtaking photos of the tower and city from high atop one of the uppermost cranes. Today, those cranes are coming down. Now that the building has topped out they are no longer needed for the final stages of construction of this iconic addition to a growing city’s architecturally impressive skyline.

The Shanghai Tower is scheduled for completion in 2014. The cranes and the workers who operated them played an integral role in the construction process. As architects, there is no greater thrill than seeing our designs - especially one as iconic as the Shanghai Tower - come to fruition. We deeply appreciate the hard work the crane operators and entire building crew have put forth over the past six years to bring the building to life. As a tribute to the cranes’ removal and a celebration of the final phase of construction, please enjoy the following photos. We will share more as the Tower nears completion.

What is the range in price for ownership of a condo in the Shanghai tower? Will there be apartments for rent?
