Shopping the Globe: Bangalore

Did you know that India is the world’s largest democratic nation? That over 40% of the world’s under-25-year-old population lives in India? And that there are more middle class consumers (350 million) than there are people in the United States? These are some of the reasons why India is consistently ranked among the top five retail markets. We’re seeing more and more global retailers open new stores in our cities, and Indian consumers are opening their wallets.

We get lots of questions about our government’s Foreign Direct Investments, though; India’s diversity is not without complexity. Is it really the right time for foreign brands to start doing business here? Honestly we think the time has never been better: urban consumers are young and savvy – hungry for new brands and new experiences. Rural consumers (all 700 million of them!) are also aspiring to better products and services and are rapidly urbanizing. And only 8 percent of the retail market is currently organized, so there is tremendous opportunity for brands to bring new innovations, ideas and infrastructure to India.

Earlier this month we joined our colleagues Barry Bourbon and Smita Gupta to present the second webinar in our three-part Shopping the Globe series, live from Bangalore. We had a terrific conversation about the state of retail in India – covering everything from consumer preferences to retail prototypes to business practices to government regulations, underscoring opportunities for global retailers along the way. We invite you to watch our 30-minute webinar online:

Check out the Shopping the Globe webinar about retail in São Paulo, Brazil, too, and don’t forget to register for next month’s Shanghai webinar as well:
